The Start: Avenger Field Airport (KSWW)

The National WASP WWII Museum in Sweetwater, Texas (near Abilene) is hosting this year’s Air Race Classic. In 1943, three years before our racing Luscombe was built, the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) was formed by merging Nancy Harkness Love’s Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron and Jackie Cochran’s Women’s Flying Training Detachment. If we can be half as stylish as these women, we’re doing well! ARC is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the WASP by launching the 2018 race from Avenger Field where the WASP trained and changed America’s view of women and aviation.
Sweetwater was founded in 1879 and prospered as a railroad town. It has a rich industrial history and continues to be a hub for oil, cotton, and cattle. During WWII, Avenger Field served as the training center for the WASP. Avenger Field ceased its military designation after WWII but remains an active general aviation airport. We are excited to visit the National WASP WWII Museum at the start of the race week.
The Terminus: Eastern Slope Regional Airport (KIZG)
We expect to hand-fly approximately 50 hours during race week (ferry time and race time), so we will be ready to see Fryeburg, Maine on June 22nd. Fryeburg is near Portland. We expect cool weather and a beautiful landscape to unwind and gather with our new racer friends.
